Project Overview
Located in Chatham, Ontario, the Romney Wind Energy Centre was the first Wind Farm in North America built solely using a tower crane. The Vestas V136 turbines have hub heights of 132 meters tall. Building these massive turbines posed challenges, particularly around meeting tight construction timelines and minimizing environmental impact. Traditionally, crawler cranes are used for wind farm construction, but this approach was deemed not the most efficient plan for the project. An innovative solution was needed to stay on schedule and mitigate risks.
Leavitt Cranes supplied the Kroll K1650L Luffing Tower Crane for the Romney Wind Energy Centre, marking a milestone as the first wind farm in North America to use tower cranes for construction. The tower crane is able to operate in higher winds (15-20 m/s), a smaller environmental footprint, and significantly faster setup and teardown times. The crane, for this project, was assembled and dismantled in approximately 32 hours which allowed the project to push forward to completion on time.
